I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions expressed here are my own.
Crime fiction is one of my favourite genres. There’s nothing like a good whodunit with a dash of the macabre to keep you turning pages right up to the end. But I’ve read so much crime fiction and thrillers that at this point, nothing surprises me much anymore.
Did Come Back For Me manage to surprise me with its ending? Read on to find out!
A shocking discovery.
An island wrapped in secrets.
A tiny island community is stunned by the discovery of a long-buried body.
For Stella Harvey, the news is doubly shocking: the body was found in the garden of her childhood home.
The home her family fled without explanation twenty-five years ago.
Now, questioning her past and desperate to unearth the truth, Stella returns to the isolated Dorset island. But she quickly finds that the community she left isn’t as welcoming as she remembers – and that people in it will go to any length to protect their secrets.
But one thing rings true…
You can’t bury the truth forever.
Come Back For Me begins with the Harvey family fleeing Evergreen, their island of residence, in the middle of a stormy night. 25 years later, Stella Harvey, the last child and baby of the family who never wanted to leave Evergreen in the first place, is a counsellor and her sister Bonnie is the only family she is in touch with. One night, news channels announce that a body has been discovered buried in Evergreen, right by her parents’ garden.
Why did her family leave in the middle of the night? Why did her parents never allow her to go back to her beautiful island? Did the Harveys have anything to do with the body? How Stella answers these questions and comes to terms with the secrets her family staunchly held on to forms the rest of the story.
Family secrets, intrigue, bodies lying undiscovered for several years–these are all the hallmark of a good mystery, don’t you think? Come Back For Me is a gripping thriller that will keep you guessing until the last page. Every single chapter ends with a cliffhanger, making sure you just can’t put the book down until the last page is turned.
Every member of the Harvey family has a secret associated with Evergreen. In poetic prose, Perks reveals tidbits in every chapter, just enough to set your mind racing. But guesses are all you can make, because you just can’t put everything you’ve learned together into a plausible explanation for all the questions you have. Perks’ dynamite writing voice effortlessly carries the story forward–it was her beautiful writing and strong, unique characters that made me rush back to the novel each time I put it down.
Come Back For Me is an enthralling thriller with a lot of family drama, intrigue, and mystery. It’s the kind of story you will be thinking about long after you’ve put the book down. I’ve fallen in love with this fresh new voice in crime writing and with this book, I know I’ve become a member of #TeamHeidi through and through.
